FTTP Chronology:
Jan. 10, 2002 - Verizon and developers of the Brambleton development in Loudon County, Virginia, announce a fiber to the home project, wiring all new homes in the community with fiber-optics instead of copper wire as they are built. The project provides ongoing data and customer feedback about the value of using fiber optics to provide voice, data and video services all the way into homes.
May 29, 2003 - Verizon joins with BellSouth and SBC to adopt common technical standards for technology known as fiber to the premises, or FTTP, paving the way for an RFP later in the year to manufacturers of equipment that could be used in FTTP networks.
Nov. and Dec., 2003 - In two announcements, Verizon says it has selected eight primary equipment suppliers for its planned FTTP deployment, which will begin in 2004.
May 19, 2004 - Verizon holds a news conference in Keller, Texas, to announce it has selected that community for the company's first deployment of FTTP. The company also announces its first set of broadband products, which offer download speeds of up to 5, 15 and 30 mb/s and upstream speeds of 2 mb/s for the first two products and 5 mb/s for the last product.
July 19, 2004 - Verizon holds simultaneous news conferences in Huntington Beach, Calif., and Tampa, Fla. to announce FTTP deployments in those states. The company also conducts a national dial-in news conference to announce pricing for what are now known as FiOS broadband products.
Sept. 1, 2004 - Verizon begins selling its first FiOS broadband products to consumers in Keller, Texas.
Sept. 22, 2004 - Verizon announces its first agreement with a major developer of new homes, Pulte, to install FTTP into new Pulte homes as they are being built, launching the "greenfield" portion of the technology rollout.
Oct. 21, 2004 - Verizon conducts a news conference in Falls Church, Va., to announce that it has begun expanding deployment of its FTTP to six additional states in the east: Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
Oct. 26, 2004 - Verizon takes the first major step to provide video services over FTTP by naming Motorola as the company that will provide set-top boxes and other network infrastructure equipment, as well as integration and operational services.
Dec. 15, 2004 - Verizon announces its first content agreement for its planned FiOS TV video service over FTTP. The agreement is with Discovery Networks. Over the next several months, Verizon announces a series of similar agreements.
March 9, 2005 - Verizon conducts news conference in New Jersey to announce FTTP deployment there, bringing to 14 the total number of states where Verizon is deploying the new technology - half the states served by Verizon.
May 25, 2005 - Verizon announces its first set of FiOS broadband products for business customers.
Sept. 22, 2005 - Verizon announces the launch of FiOS TV in Keller, Texas, and said the service would be offered across the company's footprint in the future.
Sept. 30, 2005 - Verizon files for a state issued franchise from the Public Utility Commission of Texas to Offer FiOS TV service to 21 communities.
