Michael A. Mason joined the company in January 2008 as Chief Security Officer for Verizon. He oversees and coordinates global security efforts throughout Verizon and all its business units, including enterprise wide security strategy and programs, physical security, cyber security, and law enforcement security matters.
Prior to joining Verizon Mr. Mason was an Executive Assistant Director (EAD) with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in charge of the Bureau's Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch – the largest operational entity in the FBI. In addition to the Criminal and Cyber divisions, he was also responsible for the Office of International Operations (which included 59 overseas offices), the Critical Incident Response Group and the Office of Law Enforcement Coordination. Mason began his career with the FBI in 1985. He served in numerous management and executive management positions including Assistant Director-in-Charge of the Washington field office -- the Bureau's second largest office. He also served a brief stint as the acting-EAD for administration at FBI Headquarters. Mr. Mason was the recipient of a Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive Service in 2004.
Mason served in the United States Marine Corps from 1980 – 1985 where he achieved the rank of Captain. He holds a bachelor's degree in Accounting from Illinois Wesleyan University from which he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in April 2007.
Mason and his wife Susan (a former Special Agent with the FBI) are the parents of two boys Matthew (16) and Benjamin (13).
