Oscar C. Gomez

Oscar C. Gomez, is the vice president of the Office of Diversity and Business Compliance at Verizon Communications, a position he assumed in August 2000. His office is responsible for workforce diversity -- including diversity initiatives, communication and advertising -- in addition to economic and business development, employee resource groups and multicultural initiatives. His organization also heads up the company's work life strategies, ethics and business compliance office, as well as Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity administration and compliance.

Gomez joined GTE Southwest in 1974 as a general tariff assistant and held several tariff and pricing positions until 1978, when he became a major account manager in marketing. He held a variety of positions in the company following that appointment, including: vice president-Revenue Requirements, vice president-Regulatory and Government Affairs, area vice president-Regulatory and Government Affairs and state vice president-External Affairs. In August 1995, he was named vice president-Regulatory and Governmental Affairs in the Central Region.

In January 1997, Gomez was appointed vice president - Diversity Marketing and Management for GTE. In that role he identified and developed ethnic marketing business opportunities, oversaw efforts to identify minority and women-owned businesses as potential suppliers, and developed relationships with cultural diversity leaders at the local, state and national levels. He was also responsible for diversity advertising, marketing and working with the GTE's foundation to target community giving in support of the company's commitment to diversity. His group also served as a resource to senior management on diversity and work family issues and helped identify minority and women candidates for management positions.

In June 2000, Gomez was appointed vice president - Human Resources for Verizon's Advanced Services Group. His responsibilities included workforce development, staffing, diversity, labor and business compliance for the business unit.

Before joining GTE in 1974, Gomez was a public schools educator in San Angelo, Texas.

Gomez served as the first elected Hispanic trustee for the San Angelo Independent School district from 1975 to 1988 and served as president of that board for five years. He is the former chairman of the board of directors of Dallas/Fort Worth Inroads, Inc, and of the board of directors for the Texas Telephone Association Foundation. Oscar currently serves as a member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas. Additionally, he serves on the board of United Central Bank. Gomez is also a member of the Verizon Foundation board and a member of the board of directors of SER - Jobs for Progress National, Inc.

The Texas Telephone Association awarded Gomez the "Neville Haynes Award, " for lifetime achievement, contribution and leadership for telecommunications in September 1996. In September of 2001, Gomez received the "Outstanding Achievement Award" also from the Texas Telephone Association. This award recognizes an individual for special and unique achievements made on behalf of the telecommunications industry and whose contributions have enhanced the membership of the Texas Telephone Association.

Gomez earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Angelo State University and a master's degree in education from Arizona State University. In November 2001, he was named as a "Distinguished Alumni" for Angelo State University.
