Prepared Testimony of Verizon Executive Vice President Thomas J. Tauke to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet “Universal Service Fund Reform”
Verizon believes the Administration and Congress should implement a basic set of principles that will best extend the reach of broadband to unserved and underserved Americans, boost demand for broadband services and innovation and improve the Universal Service Fund. These principles will ensure that both broadband stimulus and USF reform work together for a common goal – to speed broadband access to all Americans.

The economic stimulus package – with public-private partnership ensuring the funds are spent wisely – seeks to connect underserved and unserved communities and citizens to broadband networks, but government funding alone won’t be enough. With the need to constantly innovate these critical networks to meet consumer demand, America will require a sound, national policy framework for broadband that encourages ongoing, private investment.
